Are computer flight simulators a valuable tool for actual flight training?
I have Microsoft's Flight Simulator '04.In addition to add-on versions of C-130 Hercules,and other prop.cargo commercial planes.I'm considering a flight academy...and one of their prerequisites is to be proficient at Flight Simulator.Is this PC based "game" actually like the real thing?
well, there is no replacement for the real thing, indeed, but using a flight simulator with REALISM set to maximum (which it is NOT, by default) will give you a feeling, whether or not you are made for this.
the fact that the REALISM is low, by default, is probably the reason why flight instructors (who don't know any better) advise against the use of flight sim, when in fact every jet pilot flies many hrs in a simulator ere getting to the real thing...
just to give an idea:
with the default REALISM setting you can practically land a Jumbo on a high way, whereas with max REALISM even landing it on a very large airport won't succeed without a lot of trying.
you should start with a very small plane (ultra-light) and just try to take of and land, properly.
once you can do that without fail (can fail as much as you want in the game, chances are you'd fail only once, if you ever try it for real...) you can move to a larger plain, piper or so.
once that works without fail...
maybe you'll stop thinking of flying as a funny thing long before you get to the large planes...
also, if you are serious about flying, you may want to get yourself FSX; its realism is much better then FS9/04.
furthermore, FSX comes with lessons that take you from an ultra-light to airliners (or cargos, for that matter) while teaching the meaning & use of the various instruments, so the instructor won't have to teach you... the a b c, sort of.
