Sony Ericsson have decided to give the Vivaz an upgrade by mounting a full, slide out QWERTY keyboard
Sony Ericsson have decided to give the Vivaz an upgrade by mounting a full, slide out QWERTY keyboard, this upgrade does take a few mega pixels away from the digital camera leaving with five, but it also transforms the device into a messaging powerhouse with advanced e-mail and IM capabilities. The Vivaz Pro still hangs on to the online aspects and media features, and the camera still shoots HD videos.
The same sleek design used on the Vivaz remains on the Pro version and remarkably the QWERTY keyboard only adds a few millimetres to the waistline, the screen is the same 3.2inch nHD effort as before; it is touch sensitive and very responsive, the Symbian S6O operating system runs the Vivaz Pro and though its usually seen on Nokia phones it manages itself well on Sony Ericsson handset, the S60 interface delivers the same menu system as its predecessor and the touch user control is much the same. The keyboard itself has well spaced and well sized keys and the phones curved chassis makes for a comfortable messaging experience.
Sony Ericsson's Vivaz Pro has a variety of messaging options for users to utilise, the phone is integrated with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSynch so your business inboxes, calendar and contacts are flexibly synchronized to add organization and keep in touch. The Vivaz Pro also enables you to handle online accounts with among others, Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. Multiple accounts can be managed simultaneously. IM messaging also plays a big part in the messaging experience; popular providers such as WindowsLive Messenger and Google Talk are compatible with the device and enable you to hold live conversations with your friends.
SNS (social networking) is also covered buy the device, a Facebook application will let you see to your account profile and check out the latest activities and events of your friends, Twitter is also integrated so you can see you friend's tweets and do some tweeting of your own. The phone can be equipped with WisePilot which is a mobile optimised navigation application, the A-GPS receiver improves navigational performance, and Google Maps has a place in the phones software and is great for route planning.
Despite the camera losing over 3 mega pixels it still maintains alot of its great performance; images come out very clear and crisp and the HD video recording capabilities are still there, all of your captured images and videos can be uploaded to various sharing sites, YouTube is integrated and the BBC iPlayer compatibility keeps its place too, the browser is the same browser used on the Vivaz and again the lack of 3G means you rely heavily on the Wi Fi technology to support your online deeds; it is fast and it is reliable but options count for everything in the mobile phone industry.
The music player will handle many types of audio file and lists your music into alphabetical order in accordance to the artist, the equaliser settings can be played with as much as you wish to create the perfect sound and the 3.5mm jack lets you plug in and listen with your own personal headphones. The microSD slot can take cards up to 32GB in memory expansion and the Bluetooth connectivity allows your Vivaz Pro to wirelessly communicate with other compatible devices.
Sony Ericsson has put together a pretty good package with the Vivaz Pro, a slide put QWERTY keyboard provides ample service to the messaging support loaded into the device, social networking and entertainment has been covered too, with dedicated applications for each. Sony Ericsson rarely messes up when it comes to a good mobile experience and the Vivaz Pro certainly provides you with one of those.

I know you can get bluetooth keyboard/mice but they cost a bomb - or do they?
Well I'm using a Logitech optical wireless mouse which I got from ebay for less than £10. I've used it as far as 12 foot from the laptop just to test it's range and it worked with no problem. And the battery life is really good as well.

Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 - Unbox
Equipped with a full touch screen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard the Vivaz Pro is ideal for users who enjoy social networking
This year we have seen some big steps being made in the messaging category of the smartphone market. One of the most noticeable additions to this field is the Vivaz Pro from Sony Ericsson; equipped with a full touch screen and a slide out QWERTY keyboard the Vivaz Pro is ideal for users who enjoy social networking and mobile web browsing. The 720MHz processor can comfortably handle big applications while the phone is well connected to handle all of your online activities.
Sony Ericsson have kept the basic design of the original Vivaz and thrown in a slide out keyboard to give it the name "Pro". The Vivaz Pro, which is available in either white or black, has been designed for the message hungry crowd and it is also suited to business users as it can handle Exchange Mail and has a Document viewer. A 3.2 inch resistive touch screen allows you to navigate the Symbian S60 interface while the screen also has a built in accelerometer for interface rotation and it can recognise handwriting for a well rounded message composing experience.
As standard the Vivaz Pro will contentedly handle a number of messaging formats which not only include SMS and MMS but various forms of e-mail and IM clients too, with all the big names from Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft Windows being compatible. Though the general build quality of the keyboard is not entirely great, it still does a fine job of supporting the user when composing long messages and e-mails.
With 2G and 3G network coverage combined with Wi Fi the Vivaz Pro can connect t the internet with ease, the device also utilises EDGE/GPRS to connect to cellular networks. The web browser is fully functional in the best possible way when you consider that you are working with resistive technology. The in-browser controls are intuitive while bookmarks can be saved. Social networking is key feature on this phone and with dedicated applications for Twitter, MySpace and Facebook it is clear that Sony Ericsson take this area seriously.
Sony Ericsson has ensured that the Vivaz Pro is multimedia friendly; they have thrown in some sharing facilities which incorporate social networks and YouTube into the sharing experience. The 5MP camera will take decent still imagery with the help of AF and LED flash while video can be captured at roughly 24fps in gorgeous High Definition 720p quality. The video player is quite capable of playing back multiple formats and the delivery of over 16M colours on the 360 x 640 pixels display does them justice.
Music can be added to the Vivaz Pro via microUSB, Bluetooth or download and multiple file types can be handled. The player has an FM radio tuner and a 3.5mm audio jack for use of headphones. The phone has a microSD slot for memory upgrades up to 16GB but I am sure the 8GB card you get will provide enough storage space. A-GPS supports the phones Google Maps application.
Sony Ericsson have not grossly overpriced the Vivaz Pro, nor have they gone out of there way to overthrow any competitors. The phone is what it is and provides a very good and very simple user experience. It looks good, the sound quality is good, and the sheer amount of options you are given for messaging is brilliant. Social networking works fine along with any other online duties you need to perform. Sony Ericsson has made a good phone (Vivaz) great by adding the keyboard.
