Managing Microsoft Windows DNS and DHCP Servers
Start And Stop A DHCP Server On Windows Server 2003
One of the basic tasks related to Windows DHCP service you must know how to do either using the DHCP MMC or the command prompt built in Windows Server 2003 is starting, stopping, suspending, and resuming the DHCP service installed on a Windows Server 2003 based device. In the following lines you'll learn how to perform all of these actions using the DHCP Microsoft Management Console (MMC) and the command prompt.
Here are the exact steps to start, stop, pause, or restart a DHCP server:
Step 1: Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.
Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP.
Step 3: Click on a valid DHCP server.
Step 4: In the menu "Action", point to All tasks and then click on one of the following elements:
* Click Start to start the service.
* Click Stop in order to stop the service.
* Click Pause to interrupt the service.
* Click Restart in order to stop and then automatically restart the service.
After having stopped or suspending a DHCP server in the console, the Resume option appears and you can click on it to make the DHCP server run immediately.
Windows Server 2003 allows you to perform the tasks above using the command line interface using one or more of the following commands:
* net start dhcpserver
* net stop dhcpserver
* net pause dhcpserver
* net continue dhcpserver
You can access the command line interface by clicking on Start, click on run, type cmd in the Open field, and then click on OK. Moreover, the commands above can also be carried out with the netsh > command prompt or in a script by means of Netsh commands for DHCP.
