Microsoft — You've Got My Attention

I was duly impressed this evening. Brett Brewer, the GM of Microsoft Live Labs put on a kick-ass demonstration of Microsoft's latest web browsing technologies. The event was hosted by MITX, and was held at Fidelity's Center for Applied Technology (who knew Fidelity even had a center for applied technology?) It was a beautiful venue with environmentally-friendly decor mixed with high-tech gadgets.

Microsoft is bucking the system with Live Labs. Their approach is almost like a web-browsing bill of rights. Brett repeatedly voiced his dissatisfaction with how data is provided online, and how poor online image quality is. The reason for his impatience is because Microsoft has found a way to solve this with three products ready for prime time now; Pivot, Seadragon, and Photosynth.

Pivot lets a user view large quantities of data in a useful and easy to understand way. Pivot can dynamically display data according to any number of criteria, and it does so in real-time, without having to wait for loading bars, or placeholder image blocks. Check out this introductory video.

Seadragon, (or Zoom.It as it is now called) eliminates the need for low-res, crappy quality images on the web. Every image online can be super high-resolution. Sound like a dream come true? It does this by loading only the data needed at each magnification level. See it work on their website. Goodbye 100px thumbnails!

Photosynth digitally stitches separate photos together to create a seamless scene where you can rotate, advance into, or zoom out of. The complex software identifies the hard corners in the photos and them lines them up. It even warps areas that are wrapping around corners. And it displays online in real-time as if it were a pre-made zoom or pan.

See all three of these technologies presented in this demo:

While Microsoft's Silverlight plugin enables and enhances these tools, some of them can also be incorporated without a plug-in via their API and AJAX. And it does it all in real-time over the Internet. Microsoft is helping us rethink the way we use the Internet and data online in a positive and proactive way. Big brother, now I'm watching you.

If we let GM, Chrysler, and Ford go under?

3 million jobs lost. With the "trickle down" theory, wouldn't these companies be hurt as well?

microsoft (computer chips)
car porters
detailers
dealerships
bridgestone
firestone
michelin
bose
auto parts stores
mechanics

The list goes on and on. Isn't this the type of bailout that would at least let a congressman sleep better at night? Rather than bailing out the bankers. (Which by the way they are setting aside 6.5 billion for bonuses) And don't blame it on the Unions, it was unions who built this country.

buzzb81...you just don't get it do you? 3 mil jobs lost IMMEDIATELY! We bailed out chrysler before and taxpayers got their money back!! The banks have already set aside 6.5 bil. for CEO bonuses. With OUR money! And as far as foreign imports, fancy BMW's, I say tax the hell out of them!

if those companies go under.

IT WILL BE THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Great Plains Grant Management Module Implementation Notes

Microsoft Dynamics GP is excellent fit for mid-size and large non for profit organization. Great Plains has special suit of non-for-profit modules, and among them Grant Management. This module enables functionality, when you on behalf of sponsors opening the grand for bidding and later on releasing the funds as project progresses. In this small article we will give you Grant Management module highlights:

1. Analytical Accounting is required. In fact, GM module deploys the functionality of Analytical Accounting: dimensions, Accounting Class (to enable Analytical Accounting tracking entries for GL, AP, RM, SOP, POP and Inventory transactions), Trees, Budgets, Budget Trees.

2. Grant object in GP is linked to Grant dimension code in Analytical Accounting. The reporting for Grant Management is done through Analytical Accounting queries, where you establish the query and send its result to Excel

3. Grant Sponsors. These are GP customers. If you don’t have them as customers, you can create them on the fly from Grand Sponsors screen. You specify the sponsored amount by each sponsor and grant fund will be increased respectively

4. Multicurrency. You should setup default currency in order to use Grand Management. It is also needed in Analytical Accounting

5. Beyond Grant Management in Analytical Accounting. GM only deploys alphanumeric dimension codes and so it is restricted. In GM you only need one dimension, unique code per grant and budget per grant dimension code. This is probably only ten percent of Analytical Accounting functionality. Analytical Accounting module in turn could be recommended to financial analysts in large corporations, where they can do real data mining, slicing and dicing analysis in Finance department
