Online Publishing

Publishing has taken a new paradigm after the coming of the Internet. More so, if one may say, after the concept of blogs is introduced. Today, any one and every one, who has something to express has a blog. Online publishing has revolutionized the publishing industry. It is now not confined only to books and publishing houses, it has gone beyond and has added a whole new dimension to the whole publishing spectrum.

Online publishing saves cost

Online publishing has various advantages over traditional publishing. The first and major advantage of online publishing is the cost associated with it. Publishing has become an affordable affair with the coming of online publishing. In the past printing was an inseparable entity from publishing. It was hard to think of publishing without printing. But fast forward to 21st century and you do not need a printing press to publish a book or a journal. All you need is Microsoft Word and an Internet connection to take your thoughts to your friends in particular and other people in general.

Power in the hands of writer

There are various other advantages of online publishing vis-à-vis traditional book publishing. Online publishing has given power in the hands of the writers. In the past a writer has to run after the publisher to print, publish and distribute his book. The scenario has changed now.  Today, one can create a book online and publish it online in the form of an e-book.  And if your book is interesting, exciting, and has potential, publishers will run after you to get it printed.

Online publication makes it easy for new writers to showcase their work to public and their friends, which would not have been possible otherwise. To take your writing to masses all you need is a story. The medium to publish it is there. Online publication has made it extremely easy to publish what you write. You can create a blog or multiple blogs and start posting your writings according theme or topic of each blog.

Online publishing saves environment

Online publishing helps in saving the planet. You don't need paper to print your book. And paper comes from forest. To publish an e-book one doesn't need to cut trees and make paper to print and publish a book. Moreover, with the help of online publishing books can remain safe and readable for millions of years as compared to traditional books, which are worn out after two or three years.

Need help with publishing my book?

Ok. So Im writing my book with microsoft word, and currently its at 10 pages. I want to see if I have any chance with a publisher. I am 13, and Have all A's in language and liteature, And really enjoy writing as my free time. I dont expect to earn actual income or high amounts of money, but urs just for my sane enjoyment. It would really help me if you could :

1. Do you know any publishers, and/or editors that help with junior authors?

2. Do I actually have to spend large amounts of cash, just to simply make a few copies?

3. I do have a manuscript, but dont have anyone to send it to. Thats where you come in :)

Thanks so much, and Hopefully, if all ends well, I will have my very own book on the bookshelf.

like the girl said, finish it! there's this one author who actually (helped) publish this dude's book. her name is Janet Tashjian. i read his book, and it's great! i'm sure yours is too. idk... email her, maybe if she's not too busy she'll email you back. i really hope you get published. i'd be the first to read! but as you are only thirteen, much like myself, getting it published may be difficult. publishers these days are REALLY busy, and seeing a book written by a thirteen year old may be shoved at the bottom of the pile. but i REALLY hope you get it!!! :D

The Key Elements For The Inside Pages Of Your Self-Published Book

While it's very important to have written a great book, the design of its cover and the design of its inside pages plays an equally important role in the overall success of the book's sales. All three elements need to work together harmoniously toward a common end, book sales.

Typography

Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the first printing press in 1439, would be thrilled and amazed at the wide array of fonts available in today's printing environment, and how the specialization of this aspect of printing is now available inside the home on a personal computer. The look and the arrangement of type in the layout of your self-published book makes the design attractive as well as easier to read.

The font you choose for your book's body copy can be personable, but it absolutely must be easy to read. It's a good idea to choose one font for headers and another for body copy. Fonts that have standard proportion and work well for body copy are: Garamond, Caslon, Goudy, Stone Print, New Century Schoolbook, and Janson Text 55 Roman. Many of these fonts are available inside Microsoft Word, although your designer would probably be using a higher end software for the book's interior, such as InDesign or Quark Xpress.

Understanding Types of Fonts

The font and style you choose for the inside of your self-published book probably requires a professional's guidance, but a bit of understanding about fonts can go a long way in making your own choices.

Open Type fonts work on both a Mac and a PC. It's wise to buy the whole font family (italic, bold, regular, etc.) as you'll use them throughout your book's layout. PostScript or Type 1 fonts are the second choice of fonts to use particularly if your self-published book is going to be offset printed.

TrueType fonts come with most Microsoft products but may cause some problems when your file is "ripped" (converted for printing). It's wiser to stick with PostScript, Type 1 or Open Type. Adobe fonts are high quality fonts.

Kerning, Tracking, and Leading

Now you may personally not be interested in the technology that uses kerning, tracking and leading, but you'll need to be aware of it so that you can appreciate the role it plays in the readability of your words. Kerning, tracking, and leading determines the overall appearance of your text. Kerning is the process of adding or subtracting space between specific sets of characters, generally in headers or headlines. Tracking is the process of loosening or tightening a block of text. Leading is a measure of the space between lines of text.

If your mind goes a bit flat over all this technology, it's time to consider hiring a good graphic designer to accomplish this for you. They actually enjoy working with kerning, tracking and leading!

About Styles

Flipping through any book will tell you about its style. Look at the headers throughout the book. Look at the paragraph format. See how each chapter begins. See the paragraph spacing. Watch if new chapters begin on the right hand side of the book or see if they begin on the page immediately after the previous chapter. Do the paragraphs have single or double spacing? Is the first line of a paragraph indented or flush left?

Does the book have different layout on the left side pages as the right side pages? Where is the folio (page number) placed? Center? Top? Bottom? Once you have made yourself aware of how others have set up the inside of their books, you can decide which of these formatting styles will work best for the book you are self publishing.

The inside pages of your book probably require more decision making on your part than you realized. Having a professional design the inside of the book might make more sense now, but you are truly armed now with the basics of what that designer will be accomplishing for you and your ultimate success.
