How To Enable Form Based Authentication In Exchange Server 2003

Enabling forms-based authentication (Cookie-auth) lets you enable a new logon page for Outlook Web Access that stores the user's name and password in a cookie instead of in the browser. When a user closes the browser, the cookie is cleared. Additionally, after a period of inactivity, the cookie is cleared automatically. To access e-mail, the new logon page requires the user to enter a domain, a user name, and a password, or a full user principal name (UPN) e-mail address and password. Forms-based authentication logon does not support Microsoft .NET Passport authentication with Outlook Web Access. This is a limitation of the Forms Based Authentication feature in Exchange 2003.

To enable this logon page, you must first enable forms-based authentication on the server and then secure the logon page by setting the cookie time-out period and adjusting the client-side security settings. For more information, see the "Enabling forms-based authentication" and "Setting the cookie authentication time-out" sections.

In Exchange 2003, forms-based authentication automatically sets the default domain for Basic Authentication on the Exchange virtual directory in Exchange System Manager to a backslash character (). This restriction is designed to support user logons that use the UPN format. If you modify the default domain setting in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) to anything other than the default domain setting of "", Exchange System Manager resets the default domain setting to "" on the server.

Additionally, if forms-based authentication is deployed in a front-end/back-end configuration, the default domain setting on the back-end server must match the default domain setting on the front-end server, or you may experience authentication problems. Because the front-end server requires "" as the default domain, if forms-based authentication is enabled on the front-end server, the default domain on the back-end server must also be set to "" in Exchange System Manager.

Form-Based authentication provides the following benefits:

  • Nice GUI interface
  • Drag-and-drop feature
  • Spell checking
  • SSL (Secure Socket Layer) support
  • It provides a lot of features to the user when logon.
  • It also supports compression.

To configure OWA with Form Based Authentication, perform these steps:

Configure default web site with SSL support.

Enable Form-based authentication in ESM

How to Enable Form-based authentication

  1. Open the Exchange System Manager (ESM) from Start > Programs>Microsoft Exchange.
  2. Expand Servers and then servername.
  3. Go to Protocols and expand HTTP.
  4. Right-click on the Exchange Virtual Server and select Properties.

How can I get assistance setting up a yahoo email address with microsoft mail.?

I recently added another yahoo e-mail address but I am unable to add this account to my Microsoft Mail. My new additional address is [email protected]

I used these pop settings to set up the Microsoft Mail account:

pop.att.yahoo.com port# 995 (SSL) checked and smtp.att.yahoo.com port# 465.(SSL) and authentication checked.

Microsoft Mail will then NOT accept the email and pasword I used when adding this account to Microsoft Mail.

Can you help me with this problem?

Thanks

Richard Lewitt

The only way to POP more than one Yahoo! account into a different email client is to purchase Yahoo! Mail Plus separately for each account.

Electronic Signatures for Hierarchical Approval & Authentication

In corporate organizations approvals along with electronic signatures are required at every step of any business process. Many of the business processes require sequential approval in form of electronic signatures in hierarchical order, depending on the authorities involved in the process. In case of critical business processes like accounts, finance and human resource hierarchical sequence and authentication of the approving authorities are of utmost importance. Many times these approving authorities need to add their remarks as well along with their electronic signatures.

In scenario of paper-based system, such processes get considerably delayed and increase cost overheads as it involves many commercial resources. Thus organizations prefer electronic documentation and communication, which is fast, easy and cost effective. And thus arises crucial need of maintaining the hierarchy and most importantly authenticating the signers. Digitally signing electronic documents is the most preferred way to address these needs.

Lets see a simple example of leave application in an organization. Employees seeking leave need to apply to concerned authorities for approval. Application process may vary depending on the hierarchy in organizational structure and human resource policies of that organization. But the basic concept of application and approval remains same.

Any employee seeking leave will draft a leave application mentioning the required details, sign it and send it to his/her immediate manager. Manager may then check the application, add his/her comments about the approval, sign it and send to human resource executive. Human resource executive then adds his/her comments for acceptance of the information, signs the application and archives the same for further records.

This single application document has to go through multiple authentication processes to be executed by different people involved. Each person in this entire process needs to add comments to the document and sign. This demands for a solution which supports multiple signatures, allow multiple people to add new content to the document and sign it with out invalidating the previous signatures. Section break is handy feature of Microsoft Word to cope with demand of multiple collaborators in single document.

Some advance electronic signature solutions offers an option to use the section feature of Microsoft Word to break the document in multiple sections and allows signing authorities to sign these sections independently of each other, which can be verified. This way each signer can add new content to the document without invalidating previous signatures and also ensures the integrity of the content.

With some solutions users have option to use either password-protected credentials or PKI based digital certificates to sign the communication/documents. Thus, internal communication with in organization can be authenticated using password-protected credentials while inter-organizational communication can be authenticated using PKI based digital certificates.

Simple collaboration tools and a resourceful solution for advanced electronic signature can help organization to move to paperless business processes.
