Top Kinect Hacks
The Xbox Kinect has completely revolutionized the gaming world whereby you can play games without holding a single controller. There have been many cases viewed online where this has been taken one step further and used on multiple other projects from flying a drone automatically and playing such classics as Super Mario.
As you can see from the image on the left, it appears the person is holding a lightsabar but in fact in real life it was just a stick. This shows the power of the Xbox Kinect which is yet to be unlocked officially. Microsoft recently approved of this hacking after initially reacting quite angrily to stories popping up online.
This lens will show some of the best Kinect Hacks around and hopefully inspire more people to try and make their own
#1 Super Mario using the Kinect
This video shows someone who has programmed the Kinect to recognize the movements and motions to a NES emulator. As you can see that when he moves left, Mario moves left, when he jumps, Mario jumps and so forth. It doesn't look easy to play and looks quite frustrating however, this looks to be something that most people would want to try.
As a big Mario fan I had to give top ranking out of all Kinect Hacks
Kinect as a Nintendo controller on the PC
Proof of concept. Celebrating 25 years of Mario. I programmed it to recognize my motions and passed the virtual button presses to the NES emulator. I could have placed a simulated keypad right in front of me that I can press with my hands, but I thought full body gestures were more in the spirit of Kinect. Of course, Mario isn't designed to be played like this, so this is really really hard. Drivers using OpenKinect, NES emulation using FCEUX.

#2 Lightsabar using the Kinect
Imagined having your own lightsabar, well imagine no more and get a look at this video. Proof of concept of tracking and rendering a lightsaber in real time using a Kinect hooked up to a PC. Imagine the possibilities. It works by tracking a wooden stick and overlaying the light glow on the computer. Drivers using OpenKinect, image processing, tracking, and rendering using OpenCV. Audio recorded and processed using Audacity and played using libao.

#3 Autonomous flight and obstacle avoidance with Kinect
Stunning video below shows that the Kinect can be used to automatically avoid objects! Soon we could have planes flying themselves
Technical Specs
The attached Microsoft Kinect [2] delivers a point cloud to the onboard computer via the ROS [3] kinect driver, which uses the OpenKinect/Freenect [4] project's driver for hardware access. A sample consensus algorithm [5] fits a planar model to the points on the floor, and this planar model is fed into the controller as the sensed altitude. All processing is done on the on-board 1.6 GHz Intel Atom based computer, running Linux (Ubuntu 10.04).

A VICON [6] motion capture system is used to provide the other necessary degrees of freedom (lateral and yaw) and acts as a safety backup to the Kinect altitude--in case of a dropout in the altitude reading from the Kinect data, the VICON based reading is used instead. In this video however, the safety backup was not needed.
#4 Two Kinects One Box
This is the first test of merging the 3D video streams from two Kinect cameras into a single 3D reconstruction. The cameras were placed at an angle of about 90 degrees, aimed at the same spot in 3D space. As you can see in the video, the box looks more 3 dimensional than with one camera. The quality may not be great but it is still a great video on the power of the Kinect

The two cameras were calibrated internally using the method described in the previous video, and were calibrated externally (with respect to each other) using a flat checkerboard calibration pattern and manual measurements.
#5 Control Your PC With Your Hand
We have all dreamed it, why can't I control the TV or computer from a distance with my hands.... well it has come true! This isn't restricted to just to controlling a web browser but can be done will multiple apps. If the program is in Java it makes life a lot easier to creating a Kinect compatible application and doesn't require any special language or code. Kinect Hacks made for the lazy people out there! Got to love it.

How to Get Rid of The Red Ring of Death - The Only 2 Real Ways to Repair Your XBOX 360!
Well, your XBOX 360 is in trouble. You want to know how to get rid of the Red Ring of Death, the most annoying problem that XBOX 360 gamers now face. First of all, don't feel lonely: you are definitely not alone. A recent survey showed that over 20% of all XBOX owners in the United States are dealing with non-working consoles, and the numbers in other countries are most likely similar.
The Red Ring of Death (or RRoD) is a fatal error caused usually by overheating in your XBOX 360's GPU. Over time, the clamp holding the GPU in place loosens and ultimately causes serious connection problems. Unfortunately, the clamps used in many XBOX 360 were installed improperly, and this has caused many gamers' consoles to fail. Luckily, there are two proven ways to fix RRoD permanently, and neither involve hacks or "towel tricks". Here's how to get rid of the Red Ring of Death:
1) Send Your Console Back to Microsoft - Honestly, having your XBOX 360 repaired by a Microsoft certified technician is really your best option if your warranty is still valid. They'll be able to fix the problem and safely ship your console back to you. The downside to this option is that it can be very expensive if your warranty has expired. Last time I checked, the standard repair fee was around $140, plus whatever shipping costs are incurred. Add to that a significant wait time (currently 3-6 months!), and you can start to see why so many gamers with no warranty are wanting to know how to get rid of the Red Ring of Death on their own.
2) Replace Your Console's X-Clamp - The best option for XBOX 360 owners is to simply replace the GPU's X-Clamp on your own. This will permanently fix your RRoD problem, and is generally a good idea for all XBOX 360 owners anyway. While the repair itself is relatively simple, it's best to grab a good repair guide to walk you through each of the steps. These guides can be very helpful, and are relatively inexpensive, especially compared to non-warranty repair costs.
The guide that I purchased to show me how to get rid of the Red Ring of Death was under $30, and it came with a color PDF, videos for each step, plus a well-organized members area with constantly updated information. Even though I consider myself to be an electronics "dummy", I was able to perform the repair in just about an hour, and my XBOX 360 has been working perfectly ever since.
If the above info was helpful to you, you really need to check out my popular RRoD Permanent Fix page. That's where I drop all the details about the specific repair guide I used and where you can get it.
