How to activate the Routing and Remote Access service on a Windows Server 2003
Windows server 2003 operating system gives the ability to use it as a router. You can setup static IP routing or dynamic IP routing using dynamic protocol such as RIP or OSPF. In addition, Windows server 2003 allows you to share your Internet connection through the whole company's network using the NAT (Network Address Translation) service. You can access all of these features and more using the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console).
In the coming paragraphs, you'll learn how to activate the Routing and Remote Access service on a Windows Server 2003 based computer. This article is written for LAN administrators, Windows Administrators and students preparing Windows server 2003 certifications. It can be useful also for people studying for the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification exam.
The Routing and Remote Access service is disabled by default on Windows Server 2003. To activate this service, you may follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Routing and Remote Access Microsoft Management console.
Step 2: By default, the local computer is considered as a routing server. You can add a remote routing server in the tree structure of the console by clicking with the right button on Server Status, and then click on Add Server. Finally, choose the appropriate option, and then on OK in the dialog box "Add Server".
Step 3: In the console tree, click with the right button on the server which you want to activate, and then click on Configure and Enable Routing
and Remote Access.
Step 4: Follow the instructions that you see in Routing and Remote Access wizard.
Keep in mind that you must be member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure. It is recommended to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of member of the Administrators group.
Finally, if the server is member of an Active Directory domain and that you are not an administrator of field, then ask your domain administrator to add the account of computer of this server to the RAS and IAS Servers security group in the domain of which this server is a member. The domain administrator can add the account of computer to the RAS and IAS Servers security group using the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC (Microsoft management console) or with the netsh ras add registeredserver command.

Connect To A DHCP Server on Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003 provides a Microsoft Management Console to setup the DHCP service within the operating system. The DHCP MMC makes the configuration of the different DHCP settings easy and fast. Upon the completion of the following steps, you'll be able to connect your computer to a local or remote DHCP server.
Step 1: Click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click DHCP in order to open the DHCP MMC. The DHCP console is an administrative tool for managing DHCP servers.
Step 2: In the tree structure of the console, click on DHCP.
Step 3: In the Action menu, click on Add Server.
Step 4: In the dialog box "Add Server", achieve one of the following actions:
. Click on This server, type the name of the DHCP server that you need to connect to, and then click on OK.
. Click on This authorized DHCP server, click on the name of the DHCP server that you need to connect to, and then click on OK.
Keep in mind that if you activate DHCP in Active Directory environment, you must authorize the new DHCP server in the directory service before establishing your first connection to the server. For more information, consult Microsoft website. Additionally, If DHCP is installed and is running on the actual computer, then you do not have to establish a manual connection using the wizard. In the majority of cases, the local DHCP server is displayed automatically in the list of the servers upon the starting of DHCP MMC, and you can connect to it by clicking it in the tree structure of the console.
Finally, take into account that only the users belonging to the following groups can connect to a DHCP server:
. Users DHCP
. Administrators DHCP
. Admins of the field
. Administrators of the company
