Video games consoles: the holy trinity

Video game consoles come and go. Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Commodore, Microsoft, 3D0 and many others have taught us the true meaning of what it is to be a gamer. Many did not last, which was indicative of their hardware limitations and the time period in which they were birthed. Cutting-edge was four pixels strung together to represent your on screen persona. An orchestra of sound was a single rusty tune streamed out from dusty wooden panels and the perfect controller looked more like a paddle then a traditional gamepad. Retro is out, Pacman is dead. Space Invaders is passé. From the ashes of a crumbling empire of the 80’s came Nintendo, Sony and then Microsoft. Which one is the natural successor of the NES, the Atari or the Playstation One? Which one is worthy of your hard-earned payola? It is a cliché, but it is also incredible to realise how far we have come.

· Xbox 360

Before the white lung game console with the wireless controllers appeared under our LCD TV’s, Microsoft’s earlier attempt was an unmitigated disaster financially, but heavily respected by the gamers who brought the black behemoth. A PC inside the skin of a console, the original Xbox was ahead of its time. An internal hard drive, flawless online multiplayer, high-res games and the birth of a superstar franchise – namely the Halo universe – cemented its place in the heart of fans for many years. Downsides there were a few. It was physically ugly in comparison to the Playstation and had one of the worst controllers imaginable. Microsoft imposed a tough challenge on its team: develop a new and future-proof version of its previous failure. And so the Xbox 360 was born. Akin to a piece of art, the 360 sold like hotcakes and had the game library to ensure its success. The first of the current generation of game consoles, the 360 is perfect for the online gamer who craves the best titles with the latest in graphical prowess. The DVD drive is noisy as hell though.

· Playstation 3

The Playstation 2 is selling better then the PS3 game console. This is a telling fact, with sales limping behind the Wii and the 360. Price was an issue. The president of Sony, Nobuyuki Idei, stated that “People will work harder to purchase a PS3”. With a ridiculous statement like that and a price point of $599 (initially) the PS3 was doomed from the onset. Yet, this machine has the type of specifications that tower head and shoulders above the 360 and the Wii. A Blu-Ray drive means that movies look and sound fantastic. An internal processor that supposedly has a lifespan of ten years also means that the PS3’s games could one day mirror reality in their presentation. It’s truly a pity that it is selling as well as a plague-ridden piece of cheese, though.

· Nintendo Wii

Ah yes, Nintendo video games. Every single gamer was brought up on a diet of Mario and Megaman. When Nintendo announced that they were developing a ‘motion sensitive system for all of mankind’, the planet went crazy. When the Wii was officially launched, an already crazy populance took it upon themselves to purchase every single console in existence. The Wii is the number one games console in the world. It is also the most underpowered of them all. Plus it has a dire collection of third-party titles that reflect the true garbage from rubbish software developers looking to cash in on the current Wii craze. Only first party titles, such as Mario Galaxy and Zelda, are worth the bother. With the release of the Wii-fit, Nintendo officially gained a licence to print money as it were. They have captured the heart of the casual gamer, yet left the true fan to wallow in the mire of rubbish games. Game consoles come and go, it is the quality of the games themselves that keeps them alive.

After learning about the PS3, do you still want to buy one?

-Ripped off Motion Sensitivity from Nintendo
-Ripped off the guide button from Microsoft
-$500-$600
-Buy a 360 and a Wii and still not pay as much as PS3 will cost
-Developers state the the difference between PS3 and 360 games is non-existent
- Dropped the boomerang controller for a highly unoriginal version of the Dual Shock controller.
-7 controllers per console scrapped for just 4
- No rumble in the controller because Sony was sued for $90.7 million for the rumble technology in the PS2
-Spiderman font ripped off
-Very Few good games announced for PS3
-Lieing about Killzone 2 and saying the trailer was real-time when it was actually CGI.
-Ripping off Microsoft's Online service straight down to the DL content and Point system.
-Rips off Microsoft's Custom Soundtrack feature.
- Brings nothing unique and innovative to gaming in general, but still costs more than the other 2 more innovative consoles.

Who in their right mind is still actually wanting to buy this thing?

ultimately, i don't care if stuff is "ripped off" if it provides quality entertainment.

i do, however, care that the price is ridiculous.

you can find old but fun games for pc for less than $20.

i agree with the asker's point- 360 and Wii are both looking better than PS3 right now.

Games Console Buying Guide

<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->

This article is going to look at the main games consoles on sale today, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. By reading this article, I hope that you will better understand each console and be better informed to choose the one best suited to you. I will talk first about the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 is often talked about as the most serious games console. Games are perhaps more narrowly targeted to young males than those available for the Wii for example.

The PS3 is the only console with a BluRay disc drive. This ability is a big selling point for many as it means that the console can be used in the living room as a full entertainment system.

PS3 owners can use the online store to search for games and movies and directly download them over an internet connection to the consoles hard drive. Among the available titles are many games from the PS2, and the old favourites from that system are very popular. A final point to mention is that of the three main consoles, the PS3 is generally the most expensive.

Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005. It was the first of the three consoles I am discussing to be released. In the middle of 2010, an updated slim version was released. It is now the only one on sale. Coming with a 4gb or 250gb hard drive, the Xbox has a host of features as well as gaming, mainly through a wifi connection. Sky Player is one such feature, which lets Sky customers stream programmes through the console. Also, the 360 can download films from the online store in much the same way as is possible with the PS3. Other features include a specialised Facebook portal, free downloadable game demos and online multiplayer gaming.

The games available for the Xbox 360 perhaps cover the greatest spectrum of all three consoles. While the Wii is seen more for the younger or family gamer and the PlayStation 3 for the heavy gamer perhaps the Xbox 360 can be seen as somewhere in the middle.

Nintendo Wii

The Nintendo Wii is the cheapest console on sale. It is marketed as a console for more recreational use for the whole family, and is more focused on games than entertainment in the wider sense as is the case with the other two consoles. The Nintendo has less processing power than the Xbox 360 or PS3 and as such the games are usually not as visually impressive.

Nintendo however has instead focused on the overall fun factor of the gaming experience by pioneering the use of motion control. The console picks up on the movement of the user and processed those movements into action on screen. This often creates a more involving experience. In retaliation, both Sony and Microsoft have recently released their own motion sensitive control system.

So, the Nintendo can be said to be most suited to party or family situations. It's a more relaxed and recreational experience which while not as technologically advanced as the other consoles is also cheaper. The PS3 is the most serious gaming machine on sale. It is more for those who prefer to play games alone for several hours to get immersed into another world. It also has the advantage of a BluRay disc drive but is relatively expensive. Lastly, the Xbox 360 may be seen as fitting in between the other two. Titles available cover a greater spectrum of genres and while the emphasis is on fun, there is still the impressive graphics and processing power to keep a serious gamer happy. They have however had complaints over build quality and reliability.

Whichever you choose, make sure you have a lot of fun!
