This varies a bit from version to version of Excel, but you would use Excel's ability to import external data.
In most recent versions of Excel (except 2007) you would go to the Data menu and choose Get External Data > New Database Query. It can be done in Excel 2007, but they've really buried this feature.
This opens the ODBC driver.
Then you have to configure the driver to connect to your SQL database.
When you have made a successful connection, Microsoft Query opens. MS Query is a GUI that looks a lot like Microsoft Access and lets you perform your SQL queries.
The result sets are returned to Excel.
I wrote a detailed explanation of how this works on a Mac, and I put the URL to it below. The way it works on Windows is the same, except for configuring the ODBC driver.
