What is some good inexpensive anti-virus software?

I am looking at buying a new laptop, here are some things I am thinking of using it for:

Surfing the internet daily (planning on using Firefox going mostly to sites I know)
E-mail (planning on using Thunderbird and a gmail.com address)
Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations (openoffice or microsoft)
Basic applications on my computer, like paint, solitare, etc.
A few CD games (however they are somewhat old)

What anti-virus software do you recommend? I will be connecting to the internet using a wireless router with a firewall. I take reasonable precaution with opening emails and bad websites.

Also, I would prefer a one-time pay software as opposed to a subscription-based software.

Why not use a free one? Avast is very good, with web, IM, p2p and email monitoring, and it's not a resource hog. You have to re-register it every 14 months, but it's free. Uninstall any other Anti Virus you have installed before installing this one. When it installs, check the box to enable a boot scan.
