Disabled Veterans Scholarships
Many people in this country have chosen to join the armed forces in recent years and a large number of them have been asked to serve in areas of conflict around the world. In doing so, many of them have sustained debilitating injuries or have been killed while on active duty. A lot of the injured veterans have become disabled through their service and are returning to school to create a new way of life for themselves. Disabled veterans now have many options to help pay for their schooling in the form of scholarships and grants. These scholarships and grants can often times be used by the spouse or dependents of disabled veterans or of the people who died during their service.
One widely used resource for disabled veterans scholarships is the Department of Veterans Affairs. They have made scholarships available to vets and their dependents. One example of the many awards offered is the Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry scholarship. It is designated for the dependents of service members who died in the line of duty on or after 9/11. Recipients can use this award starting after their 18th birthday. This is only one example of the type of award available from the Department of Veteran Affairs. They also administer the GI Bill benefits that service members are entitled to.
Another source of funds that are available to disable veterans, their spouses, and their dependents is offered by the Paralyzed Veterans of America organization. Dependents must be under 24 years old, unmarried, and dependent as defined by the IRS. Applicants must be US citizens, demonstrate a level of academic achievement, and can be enrolled as a full or part time student at an accredited college or university.
The AFCEA (in cooperation with Microsoft Corporation and its employees) have created disabled veteran scholarships in the amount of $2500 for those service members who were injured during the Iraqi Freedom Operations and the Enduring Freedom Operations. Applicants can be enrolled at a two or four year accredited college and these awards can also be used for online or distance learning in an approved program. These scholarships are designated for use in technical, engineering, computer, mathematics, science, and intelligence fields of study. Letters of recommendation, and transcripts will need to be submitted as well.
These are just a few of the resources available to people who have served in the armed forces, and in doing so, have become disabled. The costs of retraining offered by colleges and universities can be offset by applying for as many of these types of disabled veteran scholarships as possible.
