Setup Network Security With 5 Simple Tips

Network security is essential for every internet user. Hackers are continually stealing important information from computers financially harms those affected. Network security helps to prevent unauthorized access and the spread of malware plus viruses. Setting up a secure network is not difficult and can be achieved by the do-it-yourselfer.

However, installation of firewalls, antivirus, or antimalware programs can further help you, but proper configuration is mandatory to prevent security loopholes. Here are few easy steps to help you setup a secure network:

(A) If you are using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), it's important to consult with the system administrator at your work place.  Ensure that whatever Web Application Security or software you are using is updated. You should also check the security of your internet connection.

(B) If you have pre-installed malware or antivirus software, look for their updates. If there is no software or application then install them immediately. In the case that you currently don't have this software, download and install it from the internet. Always update your application on time as well as your virus definitions database.

(C) There are two type of malware, one is spyware and the second is adware. Spyware steals information from your computer while the adware displays pop-ups and advertisements on your computer. To make your system secure, you need to install an anti-malware program. Such an application will prevent your computer from being accessed by unwanted websites.  Be sure to update them regularly.

(D) To prevent unauthorized access of your computer, you should install and update a network firewall. Firewalls prevent outside computer access by monitoring incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer's network ports. The device can be installed between the router and computer network's port. Or, you can install firewall software to each of the hardware devices that are installed on each network computer.

If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Window 7 then there is no need to install anything as these systems come with a built-in firewall that you can configure in the Windows Security Centre window. However you can download a range of firewall programs from the internet.

(E) Are you using a wireless router? If so, you need to enable wireless network security on your wireless router. Change the current default password of the router to access it via the router's interface through a web browser. Obtain the default login and password from user guide then type the router's IP address into the address bar in your web application security Browser.

Now change your default login password and rename your wireless network as well as disable broadcasting of your network SSID. Now enable the WEP or WPA encryption for your wireless network. You will get a network key or specific network security password. Use this key to configure your devices such as laptop, smartphones etc.

You should be concerned with the security of your network and learn security to protect it from various malware and viruses. These tips will help you to setup security easily to make your network secure from any threat. Computer system hacking is now quite common, but you can fight against it with such security measures.

Certification Question??

I currently hold MCSA 2k3 and MCSE 2k I'm now studying for the upgrade to MCSE 2k3. I'm considering moving on to MCITP "enterprise admin" or considering CCNA or CCNP cert's. Which in your opinion should I pursue first MCITP or CCNA? What about Citrix cert's CCA for example ?
Also, I've scored the highest on the MCP exams in implementing security in a microsoft network directory service and/or infrastructure. After looking up the requirements for CISSP certification; are there any other security cert's that are worthwhile? I have 9 yrs experience as a network admin but no experience in the specific field of ntwk security. I can write and implement security policies, implement and enforce security templates, and GPO's with the best of 'em; I can setup up secure sessions; set up encrypted/secure VPN connections using ipsec for example, I but can I say I have actual ntwk security experience?

I'd say it depends on where you see yourself in 5-10 years. Network security is a very high level certification. When you are going for the cisco cert's, you're entering a whole new layer of networking, especially in the security side.

Choose well, because you don't want to waste your time with cert's you will never utilize. CISSP and CCNA/P with CCDA/P are a great way to go for Cisco & Network Security.

How to Setup a VPN Server Using Windows XP

Great Plains Setup: Installation, Data Conversion, User Training

Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP system is targeted to mid-size businesses, and Small Business Financials is for smaller companies.  It is common norm on the MRP market, when mid-size accounting software requires professional installing, support, data migration and reports design.  Microsoft Business Solutions sells GP through its business partner channel, securing proper software implementation support.  Let’s quickly review typical installation and setup scenarios:

1.       Installing.  Installation has two parts: server and client.  You should be ready to host Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2000 on your server in order to implement Great Plains Dynamics.  In simple case – you have just one office where you install the server and user workstations, however if you have multiple offices, you have two (or more) options, usually: either VPN connection to your central location, or Remote Desktop connection to your GP application server

2.       Initial Data Setup.  Here you can try to do just initial balances in your General Ledger and master records import: customers, vendors, employees, addresses, GL accounts.  We recommend you first to consider simple initial balances only and keep your old accounting application for historical data lookup.  In some cases you have to do more complex data conversion with history migration

3.       Data conversion.  Here you export your historical AR, AP, Payroll, GL data from your legacy accounting system, then sort of massage it in Excel and import into GP via Integration Manager or via direct SQL insert method.  IM is preferred method, in some cases Integration Manager doesn’t have connectors to help you, especially when you are deploying add-ons or third party ISV modules – if ISV doesn’t have integration option, then you deploy SQL stored procedures and scripts

4.       User Training.  When you implement GP in your organization, the implementation is typically very specific and common ERP training may be too generic to help you work out your data entry and transactions approval and posting procedures.  You can send your key employees for customer training in generic GP navigation and probably IT support, and we recommend you to hire your GP implementation partner (MBS VAR) to train your users more precisely, having your business processes addressed
