Australia's National Broadband Network - Taking Australia's communications to the next level
That the internet has become an all encompassing phenomenon that has spread its tentacles to almost every facet of life is no longer in dispute. You can nowadays initiate and complete many tasks on the internet ranging from buying groceries and home furniture to filing your taxes and obtaining medical advice.
But with the ever growing list of things that one can do through the internet, just having an internet connection is no longer enough - faster internet does make a huge difference. This is why the Australian government has embarked on the National Broadband Network which is in many respects the largest infrastructure project undertaken in Australia.
At a cost of $43 Billion, Australia is following the same line of progressive thought as Finland where legislation was recently (and famously) passed that made access to broadband internet a basic right. The NBN is set to revolutionize daily life in Australia by making available to 90% of all Australian homes and institutions a minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps (100 times faster than what most Australian's experience today) but going as high as a scorching 1Gbps. The remaining 10% of homes and institutions will be served with a combination of satellite and wireless technology that will provide at a minimum speed of 12Mbps.
But just how will the National Broadband Network translate to tangible benefits? First, the sheer size of the project rollout and the resultant infrastructure will itself directly create many more jobs in the telecommunications industry than there are at present. During the project's 8 year rollout, NBN will support about 25,000 jobs each year. Then there is the resultant job creation brought about by the higher level of efficiency of doing business through much faster internet.
The internet opens up global business opportunities for the entrepreneur. In addition, the world is increasingly embracing telecommuting as a feasible option for working and business - faster internet will only make this positive outcome a reality for more people. Filing BAS, managing an online bank account, trading in stocks, VoIP (Voice over IP) communication and online video conferencing will be far smoother than before once the National Broadband Network is up. Faster internet speeds save time and thus increase overall productivity.
The interconnection of educational institutions will make it easier to share academic knowledge between the institutions. High speed broadband internet can better facilitate virtual classrooms and interactive learning. No longer will living in one corner of the country be an impediment to attending a class thousands of miles away on the other extreme of Australia or even overseas. Students will have the ability to engage fellow students and lecturers with little need for a physical meeting. Recorded class sessions, academic software applications and video documentaries will be downloaded or streamed in real time.
Doctor's appointments will no longer mean making your way to the hospital or clinic. The National Broadband Network will bring world class healthcare services into Australian homes. The use of internet technology in delivering health services is not new - broadband internet will only make tele-psychiatry, tele-radiology, patient monitoring and electronic, secure transmission of patient data. People residing in remote parts of the country need not cover the huge distances that Australia is known for just to access medical services. The NBN will also facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing between professionals in the health care industry.
Indeed, thanks to broadband internet access, Australians in rural areas will enjoy services that would otherwise only be available in the big cities.
The quality of family life will go up once the NBN is fully up and running. Students that have to travel to a distant city to study can continue to retain intimate contact with their families. Sharing high resolution digital photos and high definition videos will no longer be constrained by the download speed.
The tangible benefits and opportunities are already spurring a number of institutions to identify the different ways the broadband can be put to maximum use. The University of Melbourne has established the Institute for the Broadband Enabled Society to develop internet based applications to be used for education, ecommerce and healthcare. The institute has attracted some of the world's largest technology companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, NEC and Ericsson.
