Google Gmail users accounts open to Cyber criminals– Your Gmail account can be compromised
Google Gmail users accounts open to Cyber criminals– Your Gmail account can be compromised.
It is not only Microsoft Hotmail servers that have been hacked, but now Google reports that their users passwords are on the loose.
The list of thousands of Microsoft Hotmail users id and password is circulating and led to Microsoft to give a warning to their users today.
Google had to follow shortly afterwards to tell their users that id and password for an unknown amount of users is circulating for them as well.
Google tells that it is not their servers that have been hacked, but they think it is phishing technique that has been used towards their users.
Google says there is not so many users seen on these lists so far, and they have activated a process of resetting passwords on the accounts they know about at the moment which will block the account.
That means that next time these users log on to Gmail, they will be asked to change their password by giving Google an email to send the new password to them.
This means that no user will loose their account in Gmail.
This problem has become more and more frequent as attacks towards email servers have become more common in the web today.
The classic phishing attacks are a problem to the IT industry, but also affect business using their services in one way or another.
A typical phishing attack tries to trick the username and password from the user through an email request that seems to come from the genuine vendor in question (in this case either Hotmail or Gmail web site).
The excuse used in the email received by the user is that the account needs to be verified or that the user will loose the account if not logged in via a link made in the email sent to them.
The link in the email makes the user go to the attacker web site, were a replicate (identical copy) of the Hotmail or Gmail web site is set up. The victim writes his/her username and password in the appropriate field, and little do they know that at this moment the username and password are in the hands of the cyber criminals.
If you have an Hotmail or Gmail account, log in now and change password, and do so on a regular basis (weekly at a minimum).

How to Use Microsoft Outlook : Accessing Gmail with Outlook: Part 1
Google: Software Bug Caused Gmail Deletions
Google on Monday blamed a software bug for a glitch that left some Gmail users without access to their e-mail.
"We released a storage software update that introduced the unexpected bug, which caused 0.02 percent of Gmail users to temporarily lose access to their e-mail," Ben Treynor, vice president of engineering, said in a blog post. "When we discovered the problem, we immediately stopped the deployment of the new software and reverted to the old version."
Late Sunday, some Gmail users logged into their accounts to find their e-mails, folders, and other documents gone. Treynor said Monday, however, that the "e-mail was never lost and we've restored access for many of those affected."
"Though it may take longer than we originally expected, we're making good progress and things should be back to normal for everyone soon," he wrote.
Google keeps multiple copies of your data in multiple data centers, but even so, this bug affected several copies of the data. Some copies were deleted, and Google has been working to recover that information.
"To protect your information from these unusual bugs, we also back it up to tape. Since the tapes are offline, they're protected from such software bugs," Treynor wrote. "But restoring data from them also takes longer than transferring your requests to another data center, which is why it's taken us hours to get the email back instead of milliseconds."
Treynor noted that e-mail that was sent to affected accounts between 6pm Pacific on February 27 and 2pm Pacific on February 28 was probably not delivered and bounced back to the recipient.
Google originally said that 0.08 percent of its users were affected by the bug, but later amended that to 0.02 percent. "As engineers dug further, got better info. We err on high side," Google spokesman Andrew Kovacs said in a tweet.
In January, Hotmail users experienced a similar phenomenon, when about 17,000 users logged on to find all their e-mails and folders deleted. Microsoft's Mike Schackwitz said at the time there was an error in a script that was supposed to delete dummy accounts that Microsoft uses for testing purposes. Unfortunately, that error also removed real user accounts; they were later restored.
