How to Recover Corrupted NTFS Partition Boot Sector?

When a hard drive partition on your Microsoft Windows 2000 workstation or Server computer becomes inaccessible or the Disk Administrator displays the partition as 'unknown', you can not access files from the partition. This behavior of Microsoft Windows leads to critical file loss situations. At this point, you need to restore lost files from an updated backup. If the backup is not updated or not available, Windows File Recovery is required to retrieve files.

The partition inaccessibility and file loss problems occur due to boot sector corruption. The NTFS (New Technology File System) file system keeps backup copy of the boot sector that you can use to restore damaged boot sector. Before you try the restore process, you should keep the following two conditions in mind. These conditions must meet for restoring the corrupted partition boot sector:

1.The partition must have NTFS file system.

2.You are able to start your system to NT.

In order to fix the damaged boot sector problem, you need to extract the backup copy of boot sector from NTFS partition and copy it back to appropriate position on your Windows hard drive. In Windows 2000, the backup copy of boot sector is stored at the end of logical partition.

For assured File Recovery during the below procedures, after verifying the NTFS file system boot sector and copy to be correct, save sector to file while seeing it. You can save it to file by selecting the 'Save As' option from File menu and specifying the filename and path.

Follow the underwritten steps to recover backup boot sector:

Select 'Drives' and then 'Physical Drive' using Disk Probe.

Double-click the 'Physical Drive'. In the box under it, uncheck the 'Read Only' check box and click 'Set Active' button.

From 'Selectors' menu, choose 'Read' and insert 0 for the 'Starting Selectors' and 1 for the 'Number of Sectors', then click 'Read'.

You are now at MBR of physical disk. Verify it by ASCII text on right hand side at Offset 8b that should read the “Invalid Partition Table.” From 'View' menu, choose 'View Partition Table'. Select correct partition number that is affected.

Find backup copy of boot sector by adding 32 to half of total sectors.

Choose 'Selectors', Read and enter Starting Sector as the sector number calculated in previous step, 'Number of Sectors' as 1.

Quit Disk Prob tool and restart your system.

In case if above method does not work, Windows File Recovery through third-party applications is required. These applications are known as File Recovery Software. They are quite safe and easy to use tools.

Reviews: Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
Getting started: the Mac App Store and the boot drive question It's very clear from the outset that Lion is a sharp break from any mainstream desktop OS just by how you get it on your system: if you haven't bought a Mac preloaded with the new OS from the start, you have to visit the Mac App Store. That's a mixed bag to us. For anyone already using Snow Leopard, it's ......

Boot Sector Virus And Device Driver Problems Make Windows Boot Disk Inaccessible

Are you encountering STOP errors while upgrading to Windows XP from Microsoft Windows 2000? Is setup process getting terminated halfway and you can not access even the Windows 2000 operating system? This behavior of Microsoft Windows renders your system completely inaccessible, as there is no working operating system on your hard drive. At this point, all of your Windows hard drive partitions become inaccessible and you come across significant partition loss situations. To recover lost partitions in these cases, Partition Recovery is required.

As an example of above mentioned problem, you may come across any of the below error messages, while upgrading your system to Windows XP: STOP: 0x0000007B (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE Or Setup has encountered a fatal error that prevents it from continuing. Contact your product support representative for assistance. The following status will assist them in diagnosing the problem. (0x4, 0x1, 0, 0) Setup cannot continue. Power down or reboot your computer now.

The error message may also occur during setup process, when your system reboots during installation process. You can try out following things to fix this problem and perform Windows Partition Recovery:

Boot Sector Virus- The above STOP error occurs when your system gets infected by boot-sector virus. If you can boot your system, use an updated anti-virus software to scan the hard drive and remove the viruses, if it finds any.

Device Drive Problems- You may encounter this behavior due to damaged device driver of boot controller, damaged information in Windows registry, and boot controller is not configured. MS Windows XP needs a mini-port driver for communicating with hard drive controller. You need to replace the damaged driver from Windows XP boot CD.

Resource Conflict- The problem may also occur because of resource conflict between another controller/SCSI devices and the boot controller. To resolve this issue, contact hardware vendor.

If an anti-virus application can not remove the boot-sector virus, you need to repartition and format the hard drive and then reinstall Windows XP. This method removes all the existing Windows hard drive partitions and cause critical partition loss situations. At this point, Partition Recovery Software are required to retrieve lost partitions and stored data.

The Partition Recovery tools are incorporated with advanced scanning techniques and thus perform absolute recovery in all cases of partition loss. With read-only behavior and simple graphical user-interface, the applications are completely safe and easy to use.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the most effective and powerful software to handle all types of partition loss conditions. It recovers FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS, and NTFS5 file system partitions. The software is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000.
