Alternative Tips on Creating an Outstanding CV
Alternative Tips on Creating an Outstanding CV
We are pleased to speak to Sally Young. Having been an HR Director at a number of multinationals in London, New York and Hong Kong, Sally is now a Founding Partner at One-To-One CV (www.121CV.com ) which is a boutique strategic CV consultancy based in London's most exclusive district of Mayfair.
We asked Sally for some advice on how to create an outstanding CV that differentiates one from all other candidates. Instead of offering those "standard tips" which have already been widely published, Sally shares with us the "alternative tips" which are essential but have always been overlooked.
Sally said: "A good CV should not exceed 2 pages. There is substantial research which indicates that no more than 48% of interviewers read past page 1. In other words, if your CV is 2 pages or longer, you need to make sure that you have all the essential items in the first page and treat page 2 onwards as more of an annex".
Now that we have got that put of the way, Sally mentions that you can put a considerable amount of information on one page. A good piece of advice is to use tables in Microsoft Word, as they are a relatively easy way of making good use of limited space whilst making sure that everything is aligned as it should be.
Another important tip is to keep the design of your CV simple. The best fonts, the most tried and tested, are Arial or Times New Roman. Go for a white background with black text. No fancy animations or flash. Many people will print the CV on paper, consequently any non-standard colours and/or animations will not come through and will make the CV look odd.
If you are sending your CV in electronic format or as an email attachment, try sending it in PDF format rather than MS Word, if possible. It looks far more professional and you are guaranteed that the layout on the receiving end will be what you want it to be.
It is absolutely vital to ensure that there are no typos or spelling errors. Any of these oversights will most likely get your CV thrown straight into the dustbin. The interviewer would think to themselves: "if you didn't bother taking 2 minutes to spell check your CV before applying, why should I hire you and spend money and months training you?" Sally further emphasised that with the availability of spell check tools, there should be no excuse for having any spelling mistakes.
At this stage, think of your CV as a glorified business card. Take the time out to craft it. Get a professional to look at it and ask for advice. You can spend days, weeks or even months to prepare it. Or you can look for help from a professional. With the advent of the internet, you have no reason why your CV should not be outstanding.

it's been one unfortunate issue after another today with Modern Warfare 2's Stimulus Package DLC. First the DLC was released but the title update needed to play the update didn't make it out the door. Microsoft got that straightened and the title update to Modern Warfare 2 is live but now demand overwhelmed the Xbox Live servers causing issues with people not only playing the game but issues with Live Marketplace transactions as well.
The issues appear to be easing now as the Xbox Live support team works with Infinity Ward but there are still reports of people not being able to join multi-player matches. The Xbox Support Twitter has been flooded with complaints and questions. However, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling posted a picture to his Twitter account showing the steady increase in the number of users as the fix the issues and Xbox Live's "E" tweets that "XboxLIVE matchmaking and MW2 are in a much better place now and I see many of you playing. We're still cleaning up a few loose ends."

How to write a job winning CV
A CV simply stand's for "curriculum Vitae" normally called in the UK.It is also called "Resume" in the US and other parts of the world. It simply means a brief written account of ones past history[eg education, employment experience],used when applying for a job.
CV and resume are sometimes interchanged,so it shouldn't confuse you.No two CV's can be the same because each individual has his/her own individual experience, training.Your CV is meant to be as individual as you are,so hopefully after the end of this article you will be able to write a CV that is concise, factual and an attractive piece of document that will give you an interview spot.
Writing of CV should be taken seriously. Why?because in job search/interviews where there are so many candidates going for the same job, screening can be done by just looking at someones CV and application, this is why precision should be taken in writing CV's and letters of application of which I'll deal with effectively.
Many people have different views about CV layout.Again no two CV's will be the same, the design of your CV should reflect your personality and how suitable it is for the job you are going for.for instance an accountants CV is different from that of an engineer.Usually,a CV is normally typed using Microsoft except stated by the company for handwritten CV,otherwise make use of a PC.
Writing pattern
-It is not uncommon in this age to find short hand form of word or jargon/slang in letter which may be acceptable in informal writing. It is very necessary that you don't include those in CV writing, use clear and simple English that will be understandable by your interviewer. As much as possible I'll advice you avoid the use of complex grammar.Remember you want them to invite you not getting them confused while reading your CV.Even if you are so good in English, keep it to yourself for now, because most of the interviewers don;t get impressed by that, just make it brief.
Self Promotion
-This is not the same thing as been boastful. You are only trying to sell your self. You can do this by mentioning the outstanding things skills you have in a particular area that relates to the job,you can also mention your past achievements, awards, rewards and promotions gained from previous job.Know that no one will blow your trumpet for you.
Presentation
-I have often seen people who study engineering work in banks because of one singular thing,"presentation".The way you present your Cv matters a lot, even if your qualification doesn't match the position, the interviewer might be impressed and decides to invite you for a chat.
