Win-Win Lotus Domino to Exchange Migration Retains Old Email Data & Gives Better Email Environment
We All Love the Good Old Email Communication: The mere thought of modern businesses without email communication is quite absurd. Isn't it? Need for email communication is evident and quite axiomatic for all the companies existing in the business world today. Email communication a necessary, although not a sufficient condition for the success of any corporate entity.
Email Systems in Business Set Ups: One of the most basic things that every company does while setting off from the ground is to set up a custom email system in their set up. Now, there always are certain parameters, within which, any email system is made to operate, which most companies describe as the standard setup. Besides these parameters, there is an evident need for dynamism and flexibility, which create many new demands on company's email system. These are as follows:
- Ability for accessing mail over Internet
- Email Access from mobile devices
- Integrated collaboration functionalities like shared address books, contacts, calendars, folders basically all for information sharing etc
Microsoft Outlook/Exchange – The ‘Classical' Email Solution: The software giant, Microsoft, recognized this global need of organizations during the very nascent stages and thus created Microsoft Outlook/Exchange Server, an email messaging platform and basic collaboration software, which has experienced many revisions since then; the two most recent ones being MS Exchange 2003 and 2007.
More about MS Exchange: Exchange is basically the email server software, i.e. a complete email system. Through this email system, you can easily set up and then receive the mails for the users on your company network. Using Exchange, you can relay these emails to your employees' computers easily. Microsoft Exchange Server will actually form the backend heart of this messaging platform in your company, while the front end application, through which, your employees will actually access their mails, contacts, calendars etc, is MS Outlook.
Lotus Domino to Exchange Migration – A Win-Win Situation: If you have been a Lotus Notes/Domino user, then Lotus Domino to Exchange Migration will really prove a win-win situation for you, giving two outcomes and both good! How do i find the mail server info for a microsoft exchange mail server? ?
I'm trying to setup someone on thunderbird and i need to get the server address, i only have access to the Outlook Web Address, is there anywhere i can look to find it on here?
im logging in using the web interface, not connected to the server
Since you're using Thunderbird, I'm assuming you're trying to set it up via POP (or less likely IMAP). IF you can do it, it would likely use the same server address that is used to type into the browser for OWA. However, it's not at all unusual for the server admins to either a) not allow POP/IMAP access to the Exchange server at all or b) only allow it for certain mailboxes.
Bottom line, if you can't get access to the server via POP using the same address that OWA uses, it probably isn't possible.

Exchange Recovery & Repair
Microsoft Exchange Server Data Recovery
Microsoft Exchange server is a great asset in managing your own emails. Allowing you to manage an entire companies, or even multiple companies, emails in one place it is definitely the best choice for many IT professionals. Add the benefits of a cloud backup for extra redundancy and total control over how emails are accessed, managed, and stored at a mail box level, Microsoft Exchange is a very powerful tool set. Unfortunately though being such a mission critical tool, when things go wrong a quick solution is needed. Problems can also be compounded when the last backup did not back up the database store properly or the backup is a week or older with just too much current data to be lost if recovered. Fortunately there are a number of service providers that can assist with an Exchange Data Recovery service.
Please note this guide is generally assuming most people are running Outlook (Mac or PC version) setup as a local Mailbox Exchange account and not IMAP or POP.
While Exchange Server Is Down
Please note it is highly likely emails are delivered straight to your server and no other email provider. For the small expense it would be worth either setting up a new database store straight away and reconnecting clients to it (back up old OSTs first before changing profiles in Outlook), or setup a hosted pop email service with a catch all address and just point your MX records to this in the interim. This way you can deal with new emails however you wish once the original database is repaired or emails restored and you will only lose emails until the MX records propagate or the new Exchange database is up and collecting emails. Even if you don't want to set the clients up you can still setup a new local Exchange database store to collect the usual incoming emails.
Corrupted Microsoft Exchange Store
Normally you know something is wrong when you open Outlook get the repeated message of something along the lines of "Microsoft Exchange Server Cannot Be Contacted" or "Default Folder List Cannot Be Opened". When a reboot of the server, troubleshooting of the network and PCs does not resolve the problem you can usually bet the issue is a damaged Exchange store. When this occurs the server cannot mount the database store in affect meaning at that time you have lost access to all of your emails, contacts, calendars, and other Exchange managed items. There are a number of ways to go about recovering this data and usually a good Exchange recovery service will offer two options
Quick Email Data Recovery
Using a client such as Outlook utilises what is called a local cached copy of your emails from the server or Outlook Storage Table. Basically to increase speed Outlook works off a local version of your emails and the computer syncs this with the server as it needs to. This saves the issue of having 100 people in an office all working direct from the server which would cause speed and drop out issues with all but the fastest and well managed networks. This also means that in the case of a failure of the Exchange server you can still access your emails from your Outlook or other email client. You can run OST to PST converter tools or you can even basically export your Outlook to a PST file, re-create your Exchange database and then import the PST files back in. The trouble with this is you may lose emails that may have been delivered to the server but not to your computer and also the local OST file may not contain all emails such as public email boxes and calendars.
Complete Email File Recovery
The most effective way and the quickest, is to look for a service that will extract from your physical damaged database store the individual mailboxes and provide these in PST format for Outlook or another preferred format for import back into your mail client. Generally it is better to prepare a new database and import through the individual mail clients though for a larger organisation it is worth seeing if you can get the database repaired and remount this back in to the Exchange server. Another advantage of this method is you will retrieve all emails the server had received right up until the store failed. If you had taken measures after the failure to capture the new emails coming in while the recovery was taking place you can now choose to import these into the repaired database store or if you had setup a whole new Exchange store then these emails will already be there as you import the recovered emails back.
Microsoft Exchange Recovery Summary
At all times it is best to remember that Exchange contains a lot of valuable information. When needing a recovery service choose carefully as you don't want to think data has been lost forever by what one provider has told you when the data may be possibly recovered by another data recovery service centre. Additionally a good Exchange recovery provider should be able to give you an upfront free assessment of at least a general idea of what you can expect to be recovered.
Please note that Exchange does also include it's own recovery tools however we have found success with these to be quite limiting and time spent trying to resolve the issue with these tools is better spent getting a proven, practical solution from a proper Microsoft Exchange data recovery specialist.
