Why Hasn't Microsoft Security Essentials Monopolized The Antivirus Market?

A couple of years ago saw the release of Microsoft Security Essentials which is a free antivirus program. A great many people in the antivirus market predicted that the program would be so successul that it would kill off the competition, or at the least, remove the need to pay for that type of protection.

But that hasn't happened yet.

Considering the fact that Microsoft Security Essentials performs well in independent tests, coupled with the fact that it is free, it is perhaps surprising to realise that it doesn't have a huge chunk of the market share.

Why is that?

Firstly, it is because there are many other free alternatives available, some examples of which are -

• AVG Free edition 2011
• Avast! Free antivirus 6
• Avira antivirus personal free edition
• Comodo antivirus
• PC Tools antivirus free 2011

Each of the above have their fans, either because they have been around for a long time and have built a following through brand recognition or because they simply do a good job.

Secondly, there has always been a train of thought that suggests you get what you pay for when purchasing antivirus software. I know a great many people who assume that a free antivirus program cannot possibly be as good as one you need to pay for.

Are they right?

Well, maybe, is probably the right answer to that question. i've reviewed a great many antivirus programs over the years and I've seen some great ones and I've seen some that are very poor indeed. And you know what? The free and paid programs have often fallen into both camps.

As to which you should go for, it really does depend on what you use your computer for. If you are a casual web surfer then a free antivirus program may well be all that you need in order to keep your PC secure.

On the other hand, if you need your computer for your home business or other critical tasks then perhaps you should consider an antivirus product that requires a payment in order to fund it's continual development and the need to keep it constantly updated.

If you fall into the latter category then I would recommend checking out BitDefender Antivirus 2011 or some of the other antivirus programs I've reviewed recently.

My Computer Security Needs Updating and I need Help?

I have AVG 8.5 Free, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Windows Firewall, Firefox 3.5(which I use the most) and Internet Explorer 8. I'm Using Windows XP Professional Edition With all Microsoft Updates Except Windows Live Essentials and Windows Search 4.0. WHAT ELSE COULD I ADD TO HELP PROTECT MY COMPUTER FOR FREE?

Windows live essentials you dont need and neither do you need Windows Search 4.0....it will make searching a bit faster but your also going to have to sacrifice more space on the hard drive...in the end..in my opinion it would not be worth it.........the only thing i see from the description above what your missing is a good anti-spy program...get Super anti-spyware from CNet.com downloads....the program is free and i am sure you are aware of that..........other than that everything is fine except for Spybot S&D...just keep in mind that their virus database is not updated much and lacks the newest security risks..but i would keep it on there as a back up...........
