How do I update Microsoft Word to a newer version? I am looking for the easiest way. Currently, using 2003.?
Found problem when I tried to open an attachment that had been created in a newer version.
You don't need to upgrade 2003 to open a 2007 docx file. Just download the compatibility pack http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en.
Alternately purchasing and then upgraging to 2007 is pretty easy but many people find the new ribbon interface frustrating to get used to.

Microsoft compatibility update for word 2007 won't work?
Right now I have microsoft word 2003. I've been trying to download the microsoft compatibility update so i can open files in a .docx format (ie, the format that comes with word 2007). even though i've installed the update, i still can't open .docx files. what's the problem?

Are you getting an error message?
It sounds like either the download just wasn't clean, or else you don't have some priority update loaded that it requires.

If you have all of the necessary updates, you've done the necessary reboots for after this download and install, then I'd uninstall the pack, and then run it again to see if it was just a corrupt download for some reason.
