SyncBack Reviews - Synchronize Your Windows Folders and discount 10% - 56% Off for special offer!
For as long as I've been using Windows, which for the record has been since 3.x, I've been left oblivious about the best process for synchronizing data under the OS. Now, syncing data seems like a truly simple thing, but for whatever reason, Windows doesn't make any option immediately clear. At the same time, it's difficult to find any third-party solution that can sync reliably... and especially one that happens to be free.
Being a full-time Linux user, I've heavily relied on "rsync" over the years, a CLI tool. I'd call it "simple", and for the most part it is, but because it allows some extremely fine-tuned synchronizing, the program can be as simple or as difficult as you need it to be. To show off many of the things rsync is capable of, I even wrote an article based on it three years ago.
There may be a command-line application built into Windows for syncing, but if so, I haven't found it. Being that I've been in Windows a bit more lately due to, ahem, a gaming addiction, I decided to set out and find a reliable, free syncing program for Windows.
After perusing many different software websites, I ended up ultimately discovering "SyncBack". 2BrightSparks, the program's developer, offers commercial versions of the application for those who need them, but for more basic use, it also gives people the opportunity to download a completely free version, void of any sort of bloatware or nag screens.
Being that I was testing the free version, I had expected to see a lot of semi-important features missing, but that's not the case at all. Unless you have specific syncing needs, chances are that the free version of SyncBack is going to do the trick for you. Kudos to 2BrightSparks for availing people a free solution!
When the program is launched for the first time, it should ask you if you want to create a profile right away, and for all intents and purposes, that's going to be the easiest way to kick things off. But even if not, all that it takes to create a new profile is to click the "New" button in the bottom-left corner.
"Backup" and "Synchronisation" might sound like similar processes, but there's quite a large difference. To backup means that your files are simply copied over to a backup location, without concern of whether or not a file exists on the target that's no longer available on the source. Synchronisation is different in that it allows you to keep data in two folders completely identical.
If your goal is to simply backup data from one folder into another, that option is going to be suitable. But if you want to make sure that the data is 1:1 (including permissions and usergroups) with both the source and target folders, then synchronisation is what you want.
Being that SyncBack up to this point looks like a very simple application, the next screen might look complicated, but it's not, trust me. It will require some reading though, because where data backup/sync is concerned, it is possible to make a mistake that you'll regret.
For most people, you won't have to leave this main screen, since the six listed profiles are bound to prove suitable for a lot of people. There are additional tabs, though, including "Advanced", "Copy/Delete", "Filter" and "Sub-directories" which allow fine-tuning of any of these profiles. Or if you are a power user, you can simply click on "Custom" and create your own.
I am not going to exhaust all of the options here, because there are far too many scenarios to tackle. But I highly recommend that you look through them to make sure that your profile is perfect, because once it is, you'll appreciate the fact that you took the time to do so.
OK, Let's take some of 2brightSparks software of hottest and being widely used by most people for having a look below:
Backup to CD/DVD
Backup to CD/DVD with disk spanning (compression not required). SyncBackPro can also backup to an ISO image file which can be mounted as a virtual drive (using 3rd party software). SyncBackPro also performs automatic disk spanning, i.e. if your files do not fit onto the CD/DVD then it will split the files and continue onto another CD/DVD.
Backup To or Restore From an Email Server
SyncBackPro allows the user to backup or synchronize their files with an email server whether SMTP, POP3, or IMAP4 (not to be confused with synchronizing emails). This is similar to backing up via FTP, however the backup is made via an email server e.g. Gmail, Yahoo!, etc. SyncBackPro provides advanced customization of the settings that allow the user to define SMTP and POP3/IMAP4 server connection details like "Must use SSL/TLS connection", "Direct SSL/TLS connection", and includes the ability to create a custom email body instead of using the default.
Scripting Support
SyncBackPro allows the user to configure the program and profiles using their own scripts. Scripts are distinct from the core code of the application, which is written in a different language. Scripting is a way in which the functionality of SyncBackPro can be changed or extended. A script is a set of instructions and is similar to the macro support in Microsoft Office, and JavaScript in web pages. SyncBackPro can use scripts written in any scripting language (supported by the Windows Scripting Host) that is installed on the computer. SyncBackPro Scripts.
SFTP Support
SFTP, or secure FTP, is a program that uses SSH to transfer files. Unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data, preventing passwords and sensitive information from being transmitted transparently over a network. Functionally similar to FTP, SFTP uses a different protocol, it is not possible to use a standard FTP client to talk to an SFTP server, nor is it possible to connect to an FTP server with a client that supports only SFTP.
Processes an Unlimited Number of Files
Instead of storing the information in RAM (memory), SyncBackPro uses a database to store details of the files it is copying. This means an unlimited number of files and folders can be processed. SyncBackPro uses RAM for performance but will automatically and seamlessly switch to a database if memory is running low or the number of files reaches a threshold. Using a database is significantly faster when the number of files is in the hundreds of thousands.
BZip2 Compression
Enjoy a higher compression rate than Zip making FTP and email backups faster, and lessening the load on network backups. BZip2 typically compresses files up to 15% more, is around twice as fast at compression, and six times faster at decompression. Bzip2 compresses files using the Burrows-Wheeler block-sorting text compression algorithm, and Huffman coding. Compression is generally considerably better than that achieved by more conventional LZ77/LZ78-based compressors.
Automatic Drive Failure Detection
Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or "S.M.A.R.T.", is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures. Mechanical failures, which are usually predictable failures, account for 60 percent of drive failure. The purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is to warn a user or system administrator of impending drive failure while time remains to take preventative action - such as copying the data to a replacement device.
Hopefully by now you are inspired to download SyncBack and keep your data backed up, given that the program is free, and also pretty simple to use. I have made the mistake of having poor backups in the past, and I couldn't have regretted it more. Don't make the same mistake, and keep your data safe! There are no excuses!

How to Install Windows Chicago Build 58
ODBC Connection to Great Plains Accounting for DOS and Windows 9.5 and 9.2
This topic is actual for Crystal Reports Designer or IT professional who is trying to export records from legacy Corporate ERP application – Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Windows. GPA was Btrieve based accounting application, and if you are still using it, you may move it to something like Windows 2003 or even 2008 Windows Server (or even Small Business Server), assuming that you understand the restriction – you have to install 32bit version of Windows on the server and the client workstations (where you can enjoy such cool operating systems as Windows7, Vista or Windows XP – all need to be 32bit). If you would like to move yourself into contemporary Corporate ERP environment with such features as Microsoft SQL Server, FRx or Microsoft Management Reporter, Graphical logo printing on your invoices, XML, ecommerce, you have the option to upgrade Great Plains Accounting all the way to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010/11.0 (this is current version on the time of writing – October 2010, I am pretty sure, this version will stay through 2011 with couple of service packs to be released). Great Plains Accounting support expired somewhere around 2001 directly by Microsoft Business Solutions technical support (Customer Source and Partner Source), if you still need support - it is available through Dynamics GP Resellers channels (you may check with Microsoft who is out there supporting Great Plains Accounting for DOS, Windows and Mac, or just find the support provider via Google search)
1. ODBC for GPA, version restrictions. We recommend you to review ODBC manual (on your GPA CD, please open DOCS folder to find the available references). ODBC openness for such historical ERP application as GPA for DOS was considered as very advanced feature in time of the late Clinton era. You should learn that recommended versions are GPA 9.2 and 9.5. Great Plains Accounting version upgrade procedure is not really complex, so if you are a version behind, please consider upgrade (assuming you have registration key for the new version, we could check it for you with Microsoft Business Solutions)
2. Pervasive SQL Driver. ODBC connection could be achieved through Pervasive Software SQL 2000 ODBC driver. As you might know Pervasive Software is successor of Btrieve technology and this software development firm reshaped Btrieve administration interface (by creating such cool features as Pervasive Control Center, graphical interface for Btrieve parameters change). We recommend you to install Pervasive SQL 2000 Service Pack 3 or 2 on your workstation or server which hosts Great Plains Accounting Btrieve database
3. DDF files. Btrieve, at least its older versions works better if you provide Data Definition Files. You can produce these files if you read ODBC Great Plains Accounting manual, where the procedure requires you to have GPA ODBC Diskette 1 of 2. If you do not have floppy drive on your modern server, you can create ISO image via such popular software as Nero, etc. and map ISO file via virtual DVD/CD drive software (Magic Disk, or similar). If you do not have the diskette, call us, we have DDF files for purchase and we are consultants to help you with GPA issues
4. Some recommendations if you are running your business on Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Windows. Each GPA manual recommends you to mage company backup, prior to such procedures as Transactions or Batches posting. In default installation environment you should backup C:GPSGPDATA and if you have several GPA companies, these should be also backed up, prior to transaction posting. In bullet proof scenario, you should have USB external drive or tape backup to be ready to backup your C:GPS folder (in this case system info and all the companies DB are backed up)
